Review: Navitas Naturals.

Keeping with the theme of the week -- which is smoothies for all you not keeping up -- I decided to whip one up with some fun stuff that Navitas Naturals sent me recently. Unfortunately, I don't have anything 'green' in the house -- I'm currently on lock down with a sick toddler and it's about 30 degrees outside -- so I'm only able to use what I have on hand...which isn't much!

What is a Superfood? A superfood is a nutrient-dense fruit or vegetable that contains a high content of antioxidants, proteins, omega-3, minerals, fiber or other essential nutrients that have proven health benefits. Nutrient density is the ration of calories to micronutrients - the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that are essential to health, wellness and feeling great. Nutrient-dense foods, like vegetables and fruits, have a high amount of valuable micronutrients and a low amount of calories. To protect the 'super' quality and nutrient integrity, a superfood must be certified organic and minimally processed. (pulled directly from website)

The Goods: I got a fun package from NN that included their Pomegranate Powder ($21.99) and Cacao Powder ($9.99). I was thrilled about getting to try the Pomegranate personally since it's not something that I would necessarily buy on a whim, but when this bag runs out, it'll definitely be on my list! They have 41 different products on their website from powders to whole beans to lip balm and a cookbook. All the products in their line are vegan, gluten free, kosher, non GMO and most importantly, organic.

Powders: From what I can see, they have 14 different kinds at the moment -- acai, camu, chai seed, coconut water, flax seed, goji berry, goldenberry, hemp protein, lucuma, maqui, mesquite and wheatgrass plus the two that I received. Now, I won't pretend to know what half of these are good for as far as nutritional benefits, but I do know they are all considered 'superfoods' and are extremely good for us. They come in all different sizes starting at 1 oz bags up to 16 oz ones. Guess I'll have to start slowly with a few at a time and do my research! I love the idea of all the powders since they are great for adding to smoothies and even your cooking recipes -- if you're more creative than myself that is!

Smoothment: Navitas Naturals has decided to focus on a smoothie movement using their products. Their goal is not only to teach people how to make yummy smoothies (daily) in 60 seconds, but to help people learn about the nutritional value of their superfoods. The format is fun and easy to use -- and they even break it down based on what you're using smoothies for -- ie energy, anti-aging, immunity, etc. Again, I didn't have much in the house this morning, so my smoothie was pretty boring but amazingly tasty. I will say that the cacao powder goes a long way too, so use sparingly unless you want something to be super chocolaty.

Looking to get your hands on some? They have a store locator on their page. For those of us in the Nashville area, it looks like the Turnip Truck over in East has some of their products. I guess I've never noticed them on the shelf, but I'll have to look for them. They also have an online shopping cart and do free shipping on orders over $70. You should definitely follow them on Facebook/Twitter as they feature recipes and specials quite frequently! I'll keep you guys posted on them as I introduce more of their products into my regimen!
